Concert Pop avec Pierre Alain
Devised and directed by Louise Hall

Does this sound familiar?

Student 1: Madame, can we sing that rap again ?
Student 2 : How about Le Métro ?
Student 3 : Non, je préfère Je vais à Lyon - the one about the motor bike !
Madame : I can’t get that song out of my head ! Years after your play was performed at our school, the kids are still asking for that song !
Typical comments from French teachers and students who have booked Theatre LOTE performances since 2001.

There is plenty of scientific and pedagogical evidence to suggest the huge benefits in learning a foreign language through song.

Probably nothing imprints linguistic patterns better than words wedded to memorable music. Because of the unique impressive nature of melodic music, students will retain grammatical structures and vocabulary for the rest of their lives. Students’ inherent positive response to upbeat, melodic music makes them completely engaged in the activity.
Spanish teacher/Songwriter/musician Tom Blodget, MA

(Learning a language through song) makes learning more like entertainment than work. This is true especially with pop songs which are part of youth culture.

Concert Pop aims to address the needs of French teachers to teach French and students to have fun and learn at the same time. This entertaining and uplifting interactive concert is the perfect event for your French Day or French incursion.

Using audio-visuals and live music, Pierre Alain will take your students on a journey through the backgrounds of some of France’s "coolest " and most famous French singers, from Serge Gainsbourg to the recent winner of "French idol" Julien Doré. The show also features our most popular Theatre LOTE songs, including The Revolution Rap and songs from L’Amour est bizarre !

How the show works :
Teachers prepare students for Concert Pop with the CD provided in your resource pack and by playing selected Utube music videos of French artists. Songs chosen will be linguistically simple and appropriate for schools, with catchy, simple choruses that even beginner students will be able to pick up. Pierre will provide an introduction to each song in English, and run through the chorus. The lyrics and their English translations will be displayed on a screen as the song is performed.

Audience participation :
Students will be invited on stage with Pierre to help with singing, dancing and percussion !

Concert Pop is suitable for Years 5 to 11 French students.
